How to update your Squarespace 7.0 website to Squarespace 7.1
Say goodbye to the complicated process of transferring your Squarespace 7.0 website to Squarespace 7.1! At the end of 2023, Squarespace finally launched a way to update your 7.0 site to 7.1 with literally the click of a button. Now there is a little more to it than that (it can’t be TOO simple!), but for all intents and purposes, this is a huge upgrade for Squarespace users.
Not sure what I’m talking about? Here’s a little tldr on 7.0 and 7.1;
Prior to 2020, Squarespace ran on a platform called 7.0 that had a very different editing system than you’ll experience in a new website today. In 2020 they released a new way to edit with a new platform called 7.1 and any current 7.0 websites could not be transferred over to the new system. To get the updated system, you had to start a new website in your Squarespace account using the 7.1 platform, purchase new hosting and transfer all of your content and domain (which is what I did when I updated my website and it was A LOT). Now, you can take a current website that was built in Squarespace 7.0 and convert it to Squarespace 7.1 while keeping all your content, hosting, domain, SEO, campaigns, etc. intact. HOORAY! Once you’re in 7.1 you can also update all of your sections to be in the newest content editor called Fluid Engine. If you’re a visual person like me, just watch the video below ;)
So why would you want to update to 7.1?
Great question! Although Squarespace has said they will always keep the 7.0 platform up to date, the 7.1 platform offers SO much more. Not only when it comes to design, but also options for running your business well. Things like being able to have more shop items and content organization. That doesn’t mean that updating is for everyone! If you are happy with your 7.0 website and don’t need the new updates, it is totally fine for you to stay just where you are. One big caveat to this update is that your 7.0 website MUST be using a Brine family template in order to update.
